Unseen Forces Mar Beautiful Sunday Afternoon

Cool Sunday afternoon with some light rain and breeze. Would have been a perfect day to play football, had the game not been marred by unseen forces, culminating in a 4-2 loss to Sparta Cowboys (SC) at Woodlands Secondary School.

The day started out like any other football sunday. Everyone turned up, decked to the nines in their sexy-ass blue jerseys. (Man we love this new design. Big shoutout to our jersey designer!)

Big Faz started his first competitive game for us in goal. In the absence of team captain Ben, the armband went to Uncle Raymond. Sorry. I meant Zul. With him in defence were Weijie, Hadi and Haikal. Bob and Hazry started in the middle of the park, with last week's goalscorer Dany on the left and Henry on the right. Upfront, last week's second half striking duo Eric and Syaiful started the game.

The first couple of minutes were uneventful. Due to the slippery surface, balls bobbed around, passes went astray and players were tripping and falling everywhere.

The first goal came midway through the first period. An SC winger took the ball down the right and Big Faz started backtracking towards his goal. When the shot came in, Big Faz suddenly felt invisible arms holding on to him, not allowing him to dive for the ball. In a blink of an eye, it was 1-0 to SC, much to the bewilderment of the big keeper with the bazookas as arms.

Within minutes though, AC United equalised. Dany's mazy run took him deep into SC territory and just as he entered the box, he was bundled over by an SC defender. Penalty!

The lanky winger jumped up immediately, grabbed the ball and guarded it with his life as he walked over to the penalty spot. Someone clearly wanted to take the penalty...

Dany dispatched the resulting penalty kick without much of a fuss, sending the keeper the wrong way to bring his team back on level terms.

The game continued its scrappy tone, with both teams struggling to make much headway into the other's defensive third. Weijie earned himself a yellow card with a sliding tackle that saw him whizz past Punggol, Yishun and Sembawang.

A whole host of attackers then came on for the second half. Hafeez on the right, Haiqal on the left, Andy and Smallboy up front, and Hafiz in central midfield.

The change sparked the boys in blue. Within minutes, the substitutes combined to give AC United the lead. Andy's industry won him the ball in our half. A sublime ball to his compatriot Smallboy saw the striker take the ball with a deft touch, before unleashing a fearsome left footer into the bottom right corner of the SC goal.

2-1 to AC United!

That goal though, seemed to bring the unseen forces to life.

An innocuous back pass to Big Faz saw the keeper nonchalantly play it back to Wan. But the ball suddenly bobbed up and floated to the oncoming SC striker. Eerie!

The striker was subsequently bundled over and converted the subsequent penalty to bring the score back to 2-2.

That's not all!

A free kick from 2 stateliness away was floated into the box. But instead of bouncing off the ground and into the safe arms of Big Faz, the ball took on a life of its own and decided to walk around the pitch before nestling itself in the bottom left corner of the AC United goal.

Before the exorcist could arrive at Woodlands Secondary School, a 4th goal went in. This time, a long searching ball over the AC defence left the entire team frozen in their tracks. The SC striker had time to bring the ball down, make a cup of kopi C less sugar, dip some Khong Guan biscuits before finishing the move off.

An odd afternoon indeed.

By the time the exorcist and his team arrived, the game was over. A 4-2 reverse in the hands of Sparta Cowboys, (and some say another team of unseen forces.)

"We were definitely more competitive this game than we were against the Germans last week," shared the AC manager Boonk. "Smallboy's goal was a thing of beauty, not just the finish, but the way we fought to get the ball back to force the transition.

"We will get better with more games."
