Match Report

German Blitzkrieg Flattens Unprepared Blues

Our first competitive 11-a-side game in eons ended in a 6-2 loss to the home team on Sunday evening as the German All-Stars (GAS) took the game by the scruff of the neck and pummelled us into submission from the getgo.

The customary pre-game handshake was the first sign of things to come, when our team literally disappeared behind the German All-Stars giant wall of players as they strode across to shake our hands.

We kicked off the game with the indomitable Zad in goal, a backline of Zul, Haikal and Alvianto, 5 strung across midfield in Bob, Hafiz, Ruiwei with Tobi and Ben on the wings. Upfront, Fareez and Wan led the line.

GAS kicked off the first period and immediately went on the offensive. The relatively new AC United team were unprepared for the physical onslaught and within the first 20 minutes, the team were down 3 goals. It was only after the mid period water break that the team started to settle and string a few passes together. Andy, Hazry, Hafeez and Awang were sent on to provide more bite upfront but could not find the breakthrough.

The team went into the halftime break 4-0 down.

In a bid to turn the tide, Boonk switched to a more traditional 4-4-2, bringing on Hadi and Dayat in defence. The attacking trio of Hazry, Henry and Dany were also brought on to force the issue upfront. The experienced pairing of Eric and Syaiful completed the line up of the second half team.

With an idea of how GAS plays, the AC United team looked more prepared and were now throwing in challenges of their own. Some impressive passing in the middle of the park saw Eric attempt a cheeky lob from 40 yards out, only to see the shot dip just over the bar.

But all the industry and skill would have been for nought if they did not result in an end product. And the end product finally came 8 minutes in.

Henry's body feint saw him skip past 2 GAS players to find space for himself on the right. Spotting Dany's sneaky run from the left, the lanky winger slid an inch perfect ball right into Dany's path. Without breaking his stride, and with 2 gigantic German defenders closing in on him, Dany took a measured swipe at the ball to calmly slot it under the advancing keeper to give AC United a much deserved lifeline.

The Germans did not sit back and proceeded to pummel the blue's backline. But Zad was in inspired form and anything that crept past his almost water tight defence, he smothered.

Hadi, Haikal, Dayat and Zul were working overtime, closing down every GAS attack like their life depended on it. The AC United midfield started tracking back as well, plugging holes in the AC United defence and trying to stem the GAS forays. The battles were a delight to watch. Kinda like ants keeping out an army of giants.

Against the run of play, AC United managed to sneak in a second. The scorer of the first goal, Dany, was now the architect of the second. He collected a measured pass from Eric on the left, before zipping past his marker and down to the byline. Without even looking up, he sent a delicious cross to the back post, where Syaiful was positioned and the experienced striker gleefully nodded home to double AC United's goal count.

But the effort to keep GAS at bay eventually took its toll on the boys in blue. Tiredness started to creep into their game and with their opponents banging incessantly at their door, the team eventually succumbed and conceded 2 more goals before the final whistle blew.

"It has been a long break from competitive football and we have kind of forgotten how physical a game against the German All Stars can be," admitted AC United's manager Boonk. "The German All-Stars looked sharper, faster and stronger today and unfortunately we did not match them."

"We will work on our game and we promise to give them a better game in the return leg later in the season."
