Like Learning Math In School, Sometimes It Just Doesn't Go In

by Boonadine Limdane

At 2 goals down, it would have made all the difference. But the woodwork was in a sturdy mood on Sunday, holding firm as Ben's volley and Ahmed's low drive, both having already beaten the Valientes Bomberos (VB) keeper, ricocheted back into open play and in the process, condemned AC United to their fourth loss on the trot.

It looked like a good day to play football. With cellar dwellers Valientes Bomberos as opponents, on the vast St Wilfred pitch, the boys in yellow must have thought finally, an opportunity to get some points on the table. Boonk, inspired by Leroy's playbook display the previous week, brought his own tactics board to explain the gameplan for the afternoon.

Kevin started in goal, with Tommy, Joel and Alex starting as a 3-men backline. Taufeeq, Hafiz and Smallboy reprised their role in the middle of the park, Hadi on the left and Khan on the right. Ahmed and Haz led the line for AC.

The game began in tentative fashion as both teams got to grips with the huge pitch. Tommy got an early yellow card as he tussled with the VB striker. But other than that, there were no clear chances from both sides.

As time went by, it was VB who would draw first blood. A long ball over the AC defence found their striker who nipped into the box before finishing to give his team the lead.

Bob, Haiqal and Zeid were brought in to add more forward thrust to the team and the change worked wonders for the forward line. AC United started to string together passes in the final third but in their zest to score, holes were left behind that allowed VB to score a second. A through ball this time between the centrebacks and an easy finish for their striker.

Haiqal had a good opportunity to pull something back for AC soon after. A defence splitting pass from Ahmed put the former through on goal. With only the keeper to beat though, Haiqal went for palcement, only to see the ball float into the grateful arms of the VB keeper.

At the break, the gaffer tried to shake things up and raise the team's morale. Ben, Hafeez, Afzan and Sufi were brought in to add some fresh legs to the team as they sought to get an early goal.

WIthin five minutes of the restart, Ben almost got a goal back for the team. Latching on to a beautiful ball from Taufeeq, the speedy winger unleashed a piledriver of a shot, only for the crossbar to spit it back onto the field of play, much to the horror of the AC bench!

Ahmed was next to be denied. Turning his marker like a ballerina, the hefty forward let fly a missile of a shot, grazing†the grass enroute to goal. The keeper was stranded. But the shot cannoned off the post to break Ahmed's heart.

But AC United were not to be denied a third time. Zeid, back after centuries away, bamboozled his way through the sea of VB grey, before dinking a chipped pass into the path of the onrushing Afzan. The AC fullback punched through the VB defensive line like it was made of cotton candy, leaving a trail of defenders in his wake, before laying the ball on a plate for the in-form Haiqal to smash home to make the score 2-1!

It did not take long for VB to restore their two goal lead. The VB striker outmuscled the AC defence before swinging his boot at the bobbling ball to score past Kevin for goal number three.

The said lead did not last long though. Bob received the ball deep in the VB third and seeing Zeidís diagonal run into the box, he slid a defense cutting through ball that landed straight at the marauding midfielders foot. With a cheeky lob, Zeid left the VB keeper rooted to the ground as the ball sailed just under the bar to put AC within a goal of their opponents.

Unfortunately for AC, goal number four for VB came soon after, when a dangerous ball was not cut out by the AC backline. Easy finish by the VB striker to make it 4-2.

The team tried to get back into the game but with minutes left on the clock and VB full of confidence, the men in yellow just could not break their opponents down and succumbed to VB by a score of 4-2.

Zeid, whilst happy with his first game after so many months, was perplexed as to why a team of this quality is struggling to produce on the pitch.

"I special training with Messi lah actually, that's why I learn to chip the goal," beamed the MOTM. "But damn wasted ah. Our team strong actually, but maybe no chemistry."

Boonk though believes he is the answer to the team's prayers.

"No worries. I am working on my fitness," explained the delusional one. "When I'm back, the team will be solid as a rock!"

Someone please get him to the doctor for suspected head concussion.
