Match Report

Last Kick Of The Game Breaks Yellow Hearts

by Boonadine Limdane

Just when a hard earned point looked in the bag on Sunday at the lush greens of Unity Secondary School, a moment of hesitation in the AC United backline late in the game allowed the Reds of AWSC to steal in and score a late winner and in the process, undo an hour and a half's worth of hard work!

The team arrived in the Choa Chu Kang school in high spirits, after last week's victory over Stealth Sandilos. The team looked solid too, with Zad in goal, Tommy and Muhsin at centreback while DQ and Alex completed the back 4. Hafiz, Bob and Salihin formed the centremid trio, with Kevin on the left and Haiqal on the right. Upfront, as has been the practice these past few weeks, Ahmed to lead the line.

The game kicked off in typical robust fashion. Both teams were keen to get the upper hand but it was the Red of AWSC who drew first blood. A counter attack down the left saw a deep cross into the box that found their striker at the far post. A blink of an eye later, AC were down 1-0.

Undeterred, AC United continued to pour forward and they were duly rewarded 10 minutes later. Tommy's long throw in the box was met by an AWSC defender, who made a hash of things and spun the ball into his own net to give AC United a deserved equalizer!

Hadi, Ridhwan and Hafeez were brought in as the team looked to gain the ipper hand before the break but the score remained at 1-1 at halftime.

The second half saw the boys in yellow taking the game to their opponents. The quartet of Ahmed, Hafeez, Aidil and Haiqal were proving a handful as chances were created left right and centre. But the AWSC keeper was in inspired form and AC United could not find the elusive breakthrough.

As the half drew to a close, Boonk came on for the cramping Hafiz as the team switched to a more offensive 3-4-3 in a bold attempt to take all 3 points.

Both teams traded blows but the respective keepers were keeping their teams in the game.

A standard and seemingly innocuous AWSC attack was easily snuffed out by the AC United defence and Tommy again, rose highest to head the ball away into safety. But an unexpected spin in the air caused the ball to drop just outside the AC United box. Caught offguard, the yellow backline allowed their opponents to take the initiative in a dangerous area and as fate would have it, AWSC finally found a way past the previously watertight AC United defence, ramming in a late winner to break AC hearts.

The game ended thereafter and thus ending a painful lesson for the downtrodden AC United players.
