No Happy Return To League Action
by Boonadine Limdane
If AC United were looking for an easy game to kick their season off, they should have chosen another team, other than league leaders Granchio. Having already dispatched their last 2 opponents 8-2 and 5-1, it was no surprise that the newly formed AC United squad failed to cope, ending the game in a 6-2 loss to their more accomplished opponents.
The Sunday afternoon started with the same old, same old issues. Players were slowly streaming in at 1.20pm for the 1pm kick off, forcing the half crocked player-manager Boonk to take to the field, along side Marcus at centreback. DQ and Chip made up the rest of the defence, in front of Mira's first competitive game in goal for the boys in red. Hanafi, Jansher and Hafiz made up the centremid trio, with Fareez, Benny and Dzul up front as the team sought to get the upper hand early on.
And the early upperhand they got, with Fareez chasing down a loose backpass to score a 3rd minute opener. At that point, Fareez was probably the only AC United player to have touched the ball.
AC United continued to press for a second, but Granchio got into the game with 2 quick goals, both with the striker showing a clean set of heels to zip through the static AC United backline to score.
Undeterred, the team in red continued to press and were duly rewarded when Benny latched on to DQ's long ball, fended off his marker, before laying an inch perfect ball for Dzul to clinically finish inside the right post for a much deserved equalizer.
Substitutes Sean and Basil were instrumental in ensuring the score stayed the same till halftime, with some timely tackles and smart defending.
Looking to change things up abit, wholesale changes were made to the team, with Nabil, Haiqal, Hafeez, Aliff and Haikel all coming in for the second half. But the instability that brought allowed Granchio to grab an early lead 5 minutes in.
The team tried to get on the front foot, but Granchio started to turn the screw, pressing the AC United backline further and further back. AC United did have sporadic chances throughout the half, with Heikel and Hafeez the main outlets for the team. But it was Granchio who scored.
When the fourth went in past the stranded Mira, things looked dire for AC United. Coupled with an injury to stalwart Marcus that forced star striker Jansher to play at the back, that was when the proverbial shit hit the fan.
Two more goals condemned AC United to an unflattering 6-2 defeat at Woodlands Secondary, which was pretty much what both teams deserved.
An AC United fan sitting by the sidelines was asked about his thoughts after watching his team lose to the league leaders.
"The team started out well. But their lack of familiarity was exposed by the technically gifted opponents," said Tok Kok. "But it was a refreshing sight to see a girl playing in goal for our team. And she was probably one of the better players too!
"Hope this loss will not deter her from coming back again."
That is life. You win some, you lose some. Let's hope the winning starts next week against old adversaries Everyday Sunday Tusser FC!
With a bout of illness taking out close to half the team, only 10 players were present at kick off, which forced the injured gaffer Boonk to play in goal, sans gloves even.
