Mixed Reviews In Reds Win Over Smartmat

by Boonadine Limdane

Confidence was understandably low after a string of below-par performances. But a determined AC United turned up on Sunday at Serangoon Gardens Secondary School, determined to turn things around and turn things around they did, beating old adversaries Smartmat by 5 goals to 3 to leapfrog their opponents into the top six.

But things did not pan out as such early on in the game. Within minutes of the kick off, a familiar feeling of dread started building in the guts of the AC United players as Smartmat scored a surprisingly soft freekick goal.

It took a while before the wheels begin to turn in the AC United engine room. Once that happened, AC United were a different animal! In a blink of an eye, AC United were winning the 50/50 balls, pinging 60 yard balls at will followed by killer touches. Clearly, it was a matter of time before AC United got a goal back.

Someone has been watching too many Ronaldo and Rooney videos...

But all the hard work came to nothing moments later, when the referee ended the game with the final score one apiece.

Top scorer Jansher rued the missed chances in the first half but was already looking towards the next game.

"We hit the post twice but overall it was an even game," quipped the striker. "If we beat Team Xtreme the next game we will finish the table in 4th.

""Any other result and we will finish in sixth."

With Team Xtreme also their opponents in the FA Plate tournament, it will be interesting to see who gets the upper hand in both ties.
